Agri Buzz: SEA says vegetable oil import down 9% in last seven months

The Solvent Extractors’ Association of India has compiled the import data for vegetable oils (edible & non-edible) for May 2025. SEA noted that imports during the month totalled 1,187,068 tons compared to 1,529,804 tons in May 2024, reflecting a 22% decline compared to same month of last year. This includes 1,175,028 tons of edible oils and 12,040 tons of non-edible oils. In first seven months of the oil year 2024-25 (November 2024 – May 2025), total vegetable oil imports reached 7,884,768 tons, down by 9% from 8,678,447 tons in the same period last year. The import of edible oils data do not include import from Nepal.

During Nov.’24-May.’25, 819,171 tons of refined oil (RBD Palmolein) being imported compared to 1,236,581 tons and 6,858,092 tons of crude oil imported compared to 7,331,103 tons in Nov.’23-May.’24. The ratio of refined oil decreased to 11% from 14% due to lesser import of RBD Palmolien and CPO, while crude palm oil ratio is increased to 89% from 86% mainly due to increased in import of soybean oil.

The stock of edible oils as on 1st June, 2025 at various ports is provisionally estimated at 685,000 tons (CPO 175,000 tons, RBD Palmolein 60,000 tons, Degummed Soybean Oil 260,000 tons and Crude Sunflower Oil 190,000 tons) and pipeline stock considering domestic production and consumption reported at 648,000 tons. The Total stock as on 1st June , 2025 reported at 1,333,000 tons compared to 1,351,000 tons as on 1st May, 2025 decreased by 18,000 tons.

Palm oil imports jumped 84% in May from April to stand at 592,888 metric tons, the highest since November 2024.
