Economic Buzz: UK retail sales cool in July as food inflation drives gains

UK retail sales rose 1.8% year-on-year on a like-for-like basis in July, easing from June's stronger pace. Food sales saw the biggest boost, up 3.9% thanks to warm weather and a packed sporting calendar, though much of the gain was linked to food inflation rather than stronger demand. Non-food sales advanced 1.4%, with fashion enjoying early momentum before cooling later in the month, while homeware and indoor furniture continued steady growth.
