Economic Buzz: Japan inflation slows to 1.5% in January, lowest since 2022

Inflation in Japan slowed to 1.5% in January 2026 from 2.1%, the lowest since March 2022, led by cooling food prices and slower gains across transport, healthcare, and household goods. Energy prices stayed negative due to subsidies, while housing inflation was steady and clothing and communication costs edged higher. Core inflation eased to 2.0%, aligning with the Bank of Japan target, and monthly CPI fell 0.2%, reinforcing signs of easing price pressures.
