Economic Buzz: Japan retail sales rise 5.3% in May amid strong consumer spending

Japan's retail sales increased 5.30% year-on-year in May 2026, accelerating from a revised 2.8% rise in April and marking the third straight month of growth. The reading was the strongest since November 2023, supported by robust wage growth and government stimulus measures aimed at boosting consumption and easing price pressures. On a monthly basis, retail sales rose 1.9%, easing slightly from April's revised 2.1% increase.
