Agri Buzz: kharif area slides 21%, oilseed acreage tumbles sharply

Delayed monsoon has impacted kharif sowing. Total acreage has declined to 350.85 lakh hectares as on 6 July 2026, marking a 21% decrease from 442.8 lakh hectares last year, agriculture ministry data showed. Area under main kharif crop paddy is down by 13% to 60.24 lakh hectares. The pulses sowing has also dipped 22% to 37.15 lakh while area under coverage for coarse cereals fell around 16% to 60.12 lakh hectares. Sowing area under oilseeds tumbled 40% to 66.31 lakh hectares. Cotton sowing also dropped 23% to 63.18 lakh hectares.
