Economic Buzz: Japan coincident index revised lower in May

Japan's coincident economic index was revised down to 117.9 in May 2026 from the preliminary estimate of 118.5 and edged below April's 118.1, indicating a slight loss of economic momentum. Weaker industrial production, soft housing construction, subdued consumer confidence, and the impact of Middle East tensions on business activity weighed on growth, while the Bank of Japan maintained its policy rate at 0.75% and retained an upward inflation outlook.
